1)  Book review: "Mastering Your Organisation's Processes" by John O'Connell, Jon Pyke and Roger Whitehead.

This book is sub-titled "A Plain Guide to Business Process

Management" and is aimed at senior non-technical managers within an

organisation who are planning to introduce a system to automate and

manage their business processes. Although the subtitle is correct -

it is plain-speaking - it is not "plain-thinking", as the topics

covered are challenging and wide-ranging; for example, the management

of divergent viewpoints and the consideration of differing

organisational models and cultural forces. Read more.

2) Book-reading tip

I read a couple of technical books a month on average - some of the

results can be seen the our "book review" and "on the bookshelf"

resource pages. I often find going myself going back to a book to

look up a piece of information, only to find that I have forgotten

which part of the book the information came from. To cure this

problem, I note down the most useful points on a Post-it note which I

leave stuck on the first page, inside the cover. The next time I pick

up the book, all the key points are to hand.

3) On Creativity

Writing about Post-its reminds me of the story of their discovery at

the 3M company. The adhesive was invented nearly fifty years ago but

then languished in the company's achieve as no-one could think of an

application for it. Many years later, another 3M employee wondered

whether there was anything in his company's archive that could

prevent the scraps of paper falling from his hymn-book

when he was singing in the choir...

Often the creative link that solves a problem is made by an independent viewpoint - why not contact us to see how we can help with your business problems?

Have a good month,

Marcus Price
